Rechtenthal Castle

Castle Rechtenthal: Neo-Gothic charm and new purpose in the heart of Termeno

Along the road from Termeno to Sella, amid vineyards that shape the landscape, stands an elegant light-yellow building crowned with towers and battlements: Castle Rechtenthal. At first glance, it looks like a medieval manor restored to its ancient splendor, but in reality, this noble residence dates back to the mid-19th century.

It was built by Baron Franz S. von Unterrichter of Caldaro as a gift for his son Otto. Inspired by the romantic neo-Gothic style, the building consists of a residential section divided into various wings, two crenellated towers, and a surrounding wall that enhances its elegance and solidity.

A residence that changed over time

The castle remained in the Unterrichter family for many years until, two generations later, it was acquired through marriage by a German nobleman. However, in 1920, the new owner was expropriated by the Italian government, and the building’s purpose changed dramatically: first becoming a retirement home for the elderly, and later a social housing complex.

Fortunately, in the following decades, careful restoration work was undertaken, allowing Castle Rechtenthal to regain its former splendor. Since 1998, it has housed the training academy for teachers of South Tyrol’s German-speaking schools, becoming an important center for professional education.

When courses are not in session, the castle opens its halls to cultural events and gatherings, such as the renowned Gewürztraminer Symposium, which attracts experts and wine enthusiasts from all over Europe.

Today, Castle Rechtenthal stands as a shining example of how a historic residence can be reborn, combining the charm of the past with a modern cultural purpose, set against the enchanting backdrop of the South Tyrolean Wine Road.
