Castle Lamberto: The medieval sentinel above the Rienza Gorge

In Riscone, a hamlet of the municipality of Brunico, stands the majestic Castle Lamberto, perched on a rocky spur at an altitude of 990 meters. Its strategic position overlooks the narrow gorge carved by the Rienza River, offering a breathtaking view of Val Pusteria.

From its origins to the present castle

The first records of this place date back to 1090, mentioning a “Curtis” — an ancient estate — with an adjoining chapel dedicated to Saint Lambert (ad S. Lantpertum). The current structure was built in the early 12th century and served as the residence of the Lords of Rischon, ministeriales in the service of the bishops of Bressanone.

A fortress contested and repeatedly destroyed

The extinction of the Rischon family around 1380 led to a long series of ownership changes, including the Counts of Gorizia. Castle Lamberto also witnessed violent conflicts: it was conquered and razed twice — in 1336 by Charles IV, future Holy Roman Emperor, and again in 1346 by Ludwig of Brandenburg during the Tyrolean War of Succession.

From the eighteenth century to today

In 1692, the castle was entrusted by the bishop of Bressanone to Johann Winkler von Colz zu Rubatsch, whose family maintained ownership until 1811. The following year, the manor was purchased by the priest Josef Hauptmann, and his descendants still own it today.

A private castle with timeless charm

Despite its medieval roots and long, eventful history, Castle Lamberto is today a private residence and not open to visitors. Yet its allure continues to captivate those who view it from the outside: perfectly embedded in the Alpine landscape, the building dominates the surrounding area with its elegant and austere silhouette. The view from the castle, overlooking the gorge carved by the Rienza, is truly breathtaking. Castle Lamberto remains a precious and silent witness to the history of Alta Val Pusteria, still guarding its secrets behind the walls inhabited by the descendants of Josef Hauptmann.
