The most famous Christmas Markets in South Tyrol: A dream that repeats every year

In South Tyrol, Christmas is not just a celebration, but a unique experience to live together. From the scent of spices to the sound of traditional melodies, from the warm lights that illuminate the streets to the smiles of visitors: the Christmas Markets are an unmissable appointment that every year, from late November until Epiphany, enchants young and old.

The 5 original Christmas Markets of South Tyrol

The most famous and organized are those officially recognized as the Original Christmas Markets of South Tyrol, also certified as Green Events for their attention to environmental sustainability. Here they are:

Bolzano

The largest and most historic market (since 1991), set up in the charming Piazza Walther. More than 80 wooden huts offer crafts, typical sweets, decorations and much more. Don't miss the giant Advent Calendar, the charity market and the Christmas Park.

Merano

Perfect for families and those who love an elegant and relaxed atmosphere. The stalls are located along the Passirio River Promenade, among soft lights, live music and gastronomic specialties. Activities for children, ice skating rink and cooking classes complete the offer.

Bressanone

Famous for its baroque setting and for the magnificent light and music show projected on the Bishop's Palace (Hofburg). The market in Cathedral Square is one of the most romantic and authentic in the entire Alpine arc.

Brunico

Just minutes from Plan de Corones, this market combines Christmas charm with a passion for skiing. Quality crafts, typical gastronomy and many gift ideas between Via Bastioni and Town Hall Square, all surrounded by a truly evocative mountain atmosphere.

Vipiteno

The smallest of the five, but also one of the most picturesque. The scenic Tower of Twelve dominates the square, where every day a new window of the musical Advent lights up. Horse-drawn carriages complete the fairytale picture.

Even the smaller markets give great emotions

If you're looking for a more intimate and authentic experience, the Christmas Markets in the smaller villages of South Tyrol are the ideal choice:

  • Chiusa: a village lit only by candles, with costumed figures and a living nativity scene.
  • Sarentino: a traditional market where you can breathe the true peasant culture, among krapfen, mountain pine and wooden crafts.
  • Renon: the famous Christmas Train, with stalls shaped like historic train carriages, reachable by cable car from Bolzano.

Whether you choose a large market or a more intimate one, in South Tyrol Christmas is lived with the heart. Among the stalls, decorations, traditional sweets and carols under the snow, every visit becomes an unforgettable memory.

Tip: organize your vacation in advance and choose where to stay among hotels, farmhouses and B&Bs.
