A Little Jerusalem in the Heart of South Tyrol

Just beside the railway line and a short walk from the San Candido train station lies a truly special place: the Chapel of Altötting and the Holy Sepulchre. This small religious complex, surrounded by the peace of the mountains, will enchant you with its profound symbolism and timeless charm.

A Replica Turned into Art

holy sepulchre san candido

Built in 1653 by Georg Paprion, an innkeeper from San Candido who had just returned from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, this structure is an extraordinary miniature replica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Beside it stands a faithful reproduction of the Chapel of Grace in Altötting, Bavaria — a rare fusion of two major European centers of devotion.

A Path of Devotion

The two chapels stand side by side, connected by an atrium known as the “Hall of Suffering,” where sculptures depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. This quiet space invites reflection and offers an intense spiritual and artistic experience.

A Baroque Treasure in the Heart of the Dolomites

The entire complex is a precious example of Baroque architecture, bearing witness to the deep popular devotion of its time. Visiting it means not only admiring a unique work of art but also connecting with the history, traditions, and sense of the sacred that permeate this land.

To plan your visit, we recommend contacting the San Candido Tourist Association for details and opening hours — perhaps combining it with a stroll through the village’s charming historic center.
