San Pietro in Val di Funes: The village that tells the soul of the valley

San Pietro (St. Peter in German) is the administrative and cultural center of the Val di Funes, one of the most fascinating and unspoiled valleys in South Tyrol. Located at about 1,150 meters above sea level, this charming mountain village is the ideal starting point for exploring the Dolomites, but also a place to pause and enjoy slowness, silence, and authenticity.

An authentic village steeped in history and tradition

San Pietro is the beating heart of the valley: here you’ll find the town hall, the school, several shops, restaurants, and accommodations for visitors. The village is surrounded by meadows and forests and dominated by the majestic Odle peaks, creating one of the most iconic views in the entire Alpine arc.

Strolling through its narrow streets lets you breathe the authentic atmosphere of South Tyrol: wooden houses, flower-filled balconies, and the unmistakable scent of wood and hay.

The symbolic church and panorama

At the center of the village rises the Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul, whose origins probably date back to the 13th century.  The current building was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century. Inside, it features beautiful frescoes, a historic organ, and a Baroque high altar with statues of Saints Peter and Paul, while from the churchyard you can enjoy an unmatched view of the valley.

San Pietro is also the perfect spot to admire the Odle at sunset, when the peaks turn pink during the famous enrosadira phenomenon.

Many trails and activities for every season

From San Pietro, numerous hiking trails start, suitable for all levels, both in summer and in winter. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk among farms and pastures or a more demanding hike to mountain huts and alpine refuges, San Pietro is always an excellent starting point.

In winter, you can enjoy scenic snowshoe hikes, sled rides through the woods, and moments of relaxation in the small hotels and farm stays of the area.

Culture, events, and local flavors

Throughout the year, San Pietro hosts several events linked to rural and religious traditions, such as parish festivals, craft markets, and folk music concerts.

And if you love good food, here you can savor typical Tyrolean dishes in cozy restaurants or in the local mountain huts: speck, dumplings, local cheeses, and homemade desserts will win you over!

San Pietro in Val di Funes is an authentic village that embodies the soul of the valley, a perfect balance of nature, culture, and hospitality. Here, every detail tells a story and every view evokes emotion.
