Curon: The Netflix series that brought South Tyrol to the world

In 2020, Netflix selected South Tyrol as the stage for one of its most fascinating productions: Curon, a series that weaves mystery, drama, and the supernatural into a truly unique setting. Set in Curon Venosta, a small village in the Upper Val Venosta near the Austrian border, the series is inspired by the legend of the submerged bell tower in Lake Resia — a powerful and evocative symbol of the entire valley.

Where Curon was filmed: A journey through the landscapes of Upper Val Venosta

Filming took place mainly around Curon Venosta and Resia, more than 1,500 metres above sea level, in an environment where wild nature and the silence of the mountains become true protagonists. But that’s not all — some scenes were also shot in Bolzano, Merano, and Lasa, giving the series a scenic variety typical of South Tyrol, where tradition and modernity blend in a fascinating mix.

Lake Resia – Reschensee – is an artificial lake created in 1950 following the damming of the Resia River for hydroelectric power production. During its construction, the old village of Curon was completely submerged, and over 150 families were forced to abandon their homes.

The only element left visible is the 12th-century bell tower, which still rises solitary from the waters of the lake. According to legend, on winter nights one can still hear the bells ring — even though they were removed long ago.

A story between reality and legend

The plot follows Anna, a mother who returns to her hometown with her twin children, Mauro and Daria, unaware of the dark secrets surrounding her. As soon as they arrive in Curon, mysterious events begin to unfold — strange reflections on the lake, eerie presences, and buried truths resurfacing from the depths.

The success of the series has renewed attention on this fascinating corner of South Tyrol, drawing tourists and curious visitors in search of both the show’s locations and the real story hidden beneath the lake’s surface.

Curon today: Between tourism, nature, and mystery

Visiting Curon means stepping into a place suspended between past and present. The modern village was rebuilt uphill from the lake, yet the memory of its submerged past remains vivid. Today, the area attracts hikers, photographers, and lovers of mysterious tales alike.

In summer, you can walk or cycle along the lake while admiring the Venosta Alps panorama; in winter, when the lake freezes, you can even reach the bell tower on foot — just like many visitors who come seeking that special thrill.
