Brothers of the Wind: South Tyrol’s nature on the big screen
In February 2015, far from the spotlight and the press, an international film crew chose the evocative setting of Racines in the Valle Isarco to shoot some of the most moving scenes of Brothers of the Wind, a film that brought the wild charm of South Tyrol to cinemas around the world. The movie was released in 2016, starring two leading actors: Jean Reno and Tobias Moretti.
The plot: A coming-of-age journey between man and nature
The film, whose original title is Brothers of the Wind - The Way of the Eagle, tells a touching story of friendship and redemption. Set in the Austrian Alps in the 1960s, it follows the young Lukas (played by Manuel Camacho), a boy withdrawn into himself after the loss of his mother. His father (Tobias Moretti), unable to face his grief, shuts himself off, leaving his son in a heartrending emotional silence.
Everything changes when Lukas finds a young eagle that has fallen from its nest. A deep bond begins between the boy and the raptor — a relationship that becomes a bridge to healing. He is supported by the wise forest ranger Danzer (Jean Reno), who guides him in the art of raising and then letting go.
A story of freedom, resilience, and unconditional love, told with extraordinary delicacy by directors Gerardo Olivares and Otmar Penker, the latter a renowned naturalist and documentary filmmaker.
The locations: Racines and Passo di Vizze — breathtaking backdrops
Filming took place in Flading, a mountain hamlet of the municipality of Racines, nestled between the Stubai Alps and the Val Giovo, at elevations exceeding 1,500 metres. A paradise for lovers of unspoilt nature, it was perfect for bringing to life a story immersed in Alpine wilderness.
Some spectacular scenes were also shot around Passo di Vizze (2,248 m a.s.l.), one of South Tyrol’s most striking Alpine passes on the border with Austria. The icy, rocky landscapes, natural light, and hushed atmosphere helped make the film’s cinematography a true visual masterpiece.
An experience to live
Visiting Racines today also means reliving, step by step, the emotion of the film. The trails through forests and mountain huts, breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, the nature paths of the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park, and the warm hospitality of local accommodations will immerse you in a fairytale atmosphere.
In winter, Racines is also a popular ski resort, while in summer it offers ideal routes for hiking, mountain biking, and scenic treks. If you love cinema, nature, and true stories, this is a destination worth experiencing.
