Lake Monticolo

Monticolo Lakes: Two emerald gems in South Tyrol’s greenery

About 8 km south of Bolzano, nestled within the Monticolo Forest, lie two stunning alpine lakes: Lake Grande and Lake Piccolo. Situated at 500 meters above sea level, these crystal-clear waters offer swimming, scenic hikes, and an unspoiled natural setting—perfect for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Two lakes, two experiences

The Monticolo Lakes differ in size and facilities, offering distinct experiences depending on what you’re looking for. Lake Grande covers 18 hectares and reaches a depth of about 15 meters. It’s the more developed of the two, featuring a swimming pool, a slide, a jetty, and a restaurant with a panoramic terrace. Lake Piccolo, by contrast, is smaller—5 hectares wide and about 12 meters deep—and offers a wilder, more tranquil atmosphere while still providing a bathing area and a small café.

Both lakes are open for swimming and, since 2009, have been recognized among Italy’s cleanest bathing waters—making them a safe and charming summer destination for a refreshing dip.

Walks through forest and water reflections

A circular trail connects the two lakes, offering a relaxing 1 hour and 30 minute walk through a truly enchanting landscape. Along the way, you can admire dense woods of chestnut, oak, cherry, and Scots pine, glimpses of reedy shores opening onto the water, and even an old medieval farmhouse that adds a fairytale charm to the scenery.

Activities nearby

In addition to swimming and hiking, the area offers many other experiences:

MTB Trails: a 20 km loop connects Appiano, the Monticolo Forest, and San Michele, offering thrilling rides through nature.

Spring Valley Trail: a 12 km hike between the Monticolo Lakes and Lake Caldaro, winding through a flower-filled landscape of snowdrops, daffodils, violets, and anemones.

How to get there

By car: From the A22 motorway, take the Bolzano Sud exit, follow the signs for Appiano and then for the lakes. Parking is available nearby.

By bus: From Bolzano, take line 131 to Appiano, then a local shuttle to the lakes.

The Monticolo Lakes offer the perfect balance of nature, relaxation, and outdoor adventure—a South Tyrolean treasure to enjoy in every season.
