Lake Fiè

Lake Fiè: A corner of paradise at the foot of the Sciliar

At 1,056 meters above sea level, above the Alpe di Siusi and at the foot of the majestic Sciliar, Lake Fiè is a true natural gem. Classified as a biotope, the lake stands out for its balance between flora and fauna, attracting nature lovers and hikers. For those seeking refuge from the summer heat, part of the lake is open for swimming, offering moments of relaxation in a spectacular alpine setting.

A place of nature and history

The lake’s outlet is the Schlernblut spring, which means “the blood of the Sciliar.” The name is tied to the lake’s history, where, according to legend, ancient propitiatory rituals were performed. Covering one hectare—half of which is occupied by dense reeds—Lake Fiè hosts extraordinary biodiversity in perfect balance. To preserve the ecosystem, swimming is allowed only during the summer months and in areas free from vegetation.

Just a few dozen meters west of the main lake lies the Upper Pond, an artificial basin created in the 16th century by Baron Leonardo Colonna, owner of nearby Presule Castle, for fish farming and field irrigation. Today, it offers another beautiful spot to explore within this breathtaking landscape.

Activities for all seasons

In summer, Lake Fiè invites visitors to cool off with a swim in its crystal-clear waters or enjoy a relaxing 40-minute walk along the circular trail. You can also explore it by rowboat or SUP, for an adventure in close contact with nature.

In winter, the lake transforms into a natural ice rink—one of the few in South Tyrol that is cleared of snow to ensure a smooth surface. Hikers can also reach the nearby Malga Tuff and make their return journey by sled.

The legend of the witches

It is said that the lake was once a gathering place for witches who performed magical rituals. According to an old legend, the village priest tried in vain to drive them away. One evening, he was caught by the witches themselves while wandering near the lake and was punished for his intrusion. Although today the lake radiates peace and tranquility, the mystery and fascination of this story still live on in local folklore.

Hikes around Lake Fiè

Among the most scenic routes is an easy 7.1 km loop connecting the village of Fiè allo Sciliar to San Costantino, passing by the lake and following trail no. 13, where a charming little church marks the two-hour path.

A more challenging hike leads to the Bolzano Mountain Hut: 16.5 km with an elevation gain of 1,400 meters, ideal for experienced hikers. Following trail no. 1, the route crosses forests, meadows, and the picturesque Fiè Stream before reaching the refuge at 2,457 meters. The return follows trail no. 3 and then no. 1.

How to get there

By car: From the A22 motorway, take the Bolzano Nord exit, follow the signs for Fiè allo Sciliar, and continue to Lake Fiè. Parking near the lake is subject to a fee.

By bus: From Bolzano, take line 170 to Fiè allo Sciliar, then transfer to the seasonal shuttle line 13, which goes directly to the lake.

With its perfect balance of nature, relaxation, and outdoor activities, Lake Fiè is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Alpe di Siusi and the Sciliar region.
