The Centenary Vine of Magrè: a historical treasure of South Tyrol

In some towns of the Garden of South Tyrol, a picturesque area located within the territory of the Monte Corno Nature Park, there was an ancient tradition: on special occasions, such as a wedding, the birth of a firstborn, or the handover of a farm, the so-called "house vine" was planted as a symbol of continuity and prosperity. This vine was then passed down from father to son, carefully tended due to its deep symbolic value.

In Magrè, this tradition was especially widespread, and in 1601, a vine was planted on the walls of the Residenza Augustin. The exact reason remains unknown, but next to the plant, a stone inscription still bears the date of the planting, with abbreviations in German-Ladin.

The Vine Today

centenary vine magre

The centenary vine of Magrè is now over 400 years old and is considered the oldest productive vine in Europe. It has withstood the Thirty Years' War, witnessed the battles of 1796 against French troops, and in more recent times, it has been repeatedly threatened by road construction work.

However, thanks to the efforts of environmental authorities, this precious natural monument has been preserved and still produces around 80 kg of table grapes annually. A true living treasure of South Tyrol's viticulture.
