South Tyrol Museum of Natural History: Between geology and biodiversity

In the heart of Bolzano’s historic center stands the South Tyrol Museum of Natural History, a fascinating place where visitors can discover the geological evolution and extraordinary biodiversity of the region.

The museum is housed in what was once the customs and tax collection office commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I, as documented in early records concerning the building. Over the centuries, it retained a primarily administrative function before being transformed in 1997 into an important cultural center.

Even today, the palace preserves original architectural elements, such as elegant pointed arches, a striking Gothic vaulted ceiling, and two painted coats of arms adorning the ribbed vault of the window — all testifying to its illustrious past.

Thematic areas of the exhibition

The museum offers an interactive experience that takes visitors on a fascinating journey through two main thematic areas:

This section retraces the geological evolution of the region, illustrating its four characteristic landscapes: the porphyry plateau of the Adige Valley, the Eastern Alps, the valleys, and the spectacular Dolomites. Alongside exhibits and information panels, you can admire the Nautilus aquarium — a large 9,000-liter coral reef aquarium — as well as various freshwater aquariums and terrariums hosting fascinating species.

Special attention is given to the adaptability of species to extreme environments and the interaction between humans and nature, offering an educational and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.

With its permanent and temporary exhibitions, the South Tyrol Museum of Natural History is a must-visit destination for anyone wishing to discover the deep connection between the territory and its remarkable biodiversity.
