The Church of Saint Gertrude in Magrè: A Baroque Jewel Divided by the Road

Along the Wine Road, in the picturesque village of Magrè, stands one of the most distinctive churches in the Lower Adige Valley: the Parish Church of Saint Gertrude. Its most curious feature? The nave and bell tower are separated by a road — an unusual detail that intrigues visitors and invites them to discover the story behind this remarkable layout.

Origins and Architectural Transformations

The earliest records of the church date back to 1343, when the building was smaller and the nave was still attached to the bell tower. Over time, as the population grew, a renovation became necessary. In 1466, the church was rebuilt, and in 1513 the current bell tower was erected, housing two fine 16th-century bells.

In the 17th century, the construction of a new rectory led to further expansion. Due to space constraints, it was decided to move the nave to the opposite side of the road, creating the only example in South Tyrol of a church divided into two main parts separated by a roadway. The old structure was demolished, and the new church was dedicated to Saint Gertrude, a saint deeply venerated in Alpine regions.

A Baroque Interior of Rare Elegance

The interior of the Church of Saint Gertrude is a masterpiece of Baroque art. The sacred space captivates visitors with its bright colors, harmonious composition, and rich decoration. The focal point is the altar wall, made of stuccoed marble and featuring a central fresco of Saint Gertrude.

Despite later modifications, several elements of the original design have survived: the side altars, sculptures, and ancient paintings — all contributing to the charm and deep religious tradition of the Magrè community.
