The Churches of Ortisei and Val Gardena: Faith, Art, and Alpine Tradition

Nestled among the Dolomites, Val Gardena is not only one of South Tyrol’s most spectacular landscapes but also a place where Alpine spirituality finds expression in ancient churches rich in art and history. Two emblematic examples of this deep bond between faith, tradition, and craftsmanship are the Church of St. James, the oldest in the valley, and the Parish Church of Ortisei, the spiritual heart of the community.

The Church of St. James: The Oldest in Val Gardena

Set in a panoramic position along the Troi Paian path above Ortisei, the Church of St. James is a true gem reachable only on foot. The short walk is more than rewarded by the beauty of the site and its artistic treasures.

Dating back to the 12th century, the church preserves original Romanesque elements but today displays a fascinating blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, the result of successive renovations. The interior stands out for its 15th-century Gothic frescoes still visible in the presbytery—an important testament to the religious art of the time—and its carved high altar, a masterpiece of Val Gardena woodcarving that perfectly embodies the union of faith and craftsmanship.

Many of the most valuable originals are now preserved at the Val Gardena Museum for conservation reasons, while faithful reproductions in the church still convey its authentic atmosphere.

The Parish Church of Ortisei: The Heart of the Community

In the historic center of Ortisei, overlooking a raised square, stands the Parish Church of the Three Magi and St. Ulrich, one of the town’s key religious and cultural landmarks. Built in the 18th century in Baroque style, it is the second most important church in the area after St. James.

Originally consisting of a single nave, it was enlarged at the beginning of the 20th century with two side aisles, while preserving its stylistic harmony and elegance. Inside, visitors can admire:

  • The impressive statue of St. Ulrich, sculpted by Ludwig Moroder, one of the most renowned artists of Val Gardena.
  • The main altarpiece depicting the Adoration of the Magi.
  • Benches and chairs adorned with wood carvings, beautifully reflecting the woodcarving tradition of Val Gardena.

Two Faces of the Same Soul

These two churches, so different in location and style, reflect the deep religiosity and artistic richness of Val Gardena. While St. James embodies the region’s ancient spiritual roots and mountain devotion, Ortisei’s Parish Church celebrates the communal faith and artistic vitality of the valley.

Visiting them means not only admiring works of great artistic value but also entering the very heart of Ladin culture, where faith, identity, history, and craftsmanship have been intertwined for centuries.
