Castel Appiano

Castle d’Appiano: Towers, frescoes, and medieval legends

In the heart of the Oltradige, nestled among dense forests and vine-covered hills, rises the majestic Castle d’Appiano (Schloss Hocheppan). Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the village below, it stands as the very symbol of Appiano — one of the most fascinating and best-preserved fortresses in the entire region.

Castle d’Appiano

A medieval fortress with many faces

Commissioned by Count Ulrich II, the castle was built in the early 12th century as a strategic stronghold for territorial control. Between 1200 and 1500, it underwent several major expansions and renovations that transformed its appearance, enriching it with Gothic and Romanesque elements.

In 1315, the fortress came under the rule of the Counts of Tyrol, and since 1911 it has been owned by the noble Enzenberg family, who continue to preserve it today. After a period of decline, a major restoration in 1964 revived the site, allowing visitors to admire one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in South Tyrol.

Castle d’Appiano

A castle of unique design

Castle d’Appiano is remarkable for its pentagonal tower — the only one of its kind in all of Tyrol — and its chapel, a true artistic treasure. Inside, visitors can admire original 13th-century frescoes uncovered in 1926, depicting not only biblical scenes and symbolic motifs but also everyday medieval imagery such as hunting scenes and the enigmatic “woman eating dumplings.”

An unmissable stop on the Three Castles Trail

The castle is part of the famous Three Castles Trail (together with Castle Boymont and Castle Corba) — a hiking route steeped in history and nature that leads visitors through three enchanting manors scattered across the hills of Appiano.

Inside Castle d’Appiano, you’ll also find a welcoming tavern where you can enjoy traditional South Tyrolean specialties, and in the panoramic garden you can relax while taking in the sweeping views over the Adige Valley and beyond.

The castle is open to the public and offers daily guided tours — the perfect way to uncover every secret of this timeless monument. If you love medieval atmospheres, good food, and breathtaking views, a visit to Castle d’Appiano is a must.
