Castle Caldiff: Ancient ruins between history and mystery
Above the hamlet of Egna Mazzon, perched on a dolomitic rock cliff, lie the evocative ruins of Castle Caldiff — one of the most fascinating and mysterious castles in the South Tyrolean Lowlands. Though time has eroded much of its structure, its ancient charm can still be felt among the remaining walls, medieval frescoes, and the legends that shroud the site.
Noble origins and lost splendor
The castle was built around 1200 by the Lords of Egna, a noble family associated with the administration of the local court. In the 16th century, the manor passed to the Barons of Payr, who transformed it into an elegant noble residence through extensive renovations that gave it its final shape.
A devastating fire at the end of the 18th century marked the decline of Castle Caldiff: the barons lost ownership, and the structure began to crumble. The tower collapsed in 1870, and today only fragments of the original perimeter walls remain.
Between frescoes and panoramic views
Although Castle Caldiff now lies in ruins, visitors can still admire architectural and artistic elements that reveal its historical importance. Notable are the 13th-century frescoes preserved in the castle’s chapel, along with a 17th-century doorway and battlements on the eastern side. Thanks to careful restoration efforts, the ruins are now open to the public and make for an ideal destination for those who love hikes enriched with history and breathtaking views.
The legend of the fire-eyed dogs
Castle Caldiff is also wrapped in an aura of mystery and legend. It is said that beneath the ruins lies an ancient buried treasure, guarded by giant dogs with eyes of fire. No one has ever managed to approach these riches — anyone who tried was driven away by the ghostly growl of the spectral guardians.
Today, Castle Caldiff is a place waiting to be discovered — perfect for those who wish to combine an easy hike with a journey through South Tyrol’s medieval past. Ruins, art, nature, and mystery: the perfect ingredients for a timeless adventure.
