Traditions and customs in South Tyrol: A heritage still alive

South Tyrol is a place where time seems to have stood still. Here, popular traditions are still deeply rooted and mark the rhythm of daily life, especially in small villages and the most authentic valleys.

Walking among the mountain farmhouses or participating in a village festival, you will often hear people speaking in dialect, see men and women in traditional costume or witness celebrations that tell ancient stories of work in the fields, faith and community.

Events linked to agriculture: Harvests, crops and transhumance

One of the most heartfelt traditions is that linked to the agricultural cycle and pastoralism. Despite modern times, in South Tyrol agriculture and livestock farming maintain a central role, not only for the economy, but also for cultural identity.

Among the most fascinating and engaging events we find:

  • The return of cattle from alpine pastures (Almabtrieb): in autumn, herds of cows and sheep adorned with cowbells and garlands descend from high-altitude pastures to return to the stables, accompanied by folkloric processions, music and typical dishes.
  • The grape harvest festival: celebrated in wine-growing areas such as Caldaro, Termeno or Chiusa, it's a festive moment that brings communities together to give thanks for the harvest and share new wine and chestnuts.
  • Törggelen: one of the most beloved autumn traditions. Typical specialties such as canederli, speck, sausages and desserts are tasted, accompanied by new wine and roasted chestnuts.

Tyrolean tradition and cultural identity

Tyrolean customs also manifest themselves during religious and civil holidays. From processions in costume to musical bands that enliven village festivals, every event is an opportunity to keep collective memory alive.

In summer and winter, historical reenactments, craft markets, folk dances take place, and there's no shortage of the famous Krampus parades, demonic figures in fur and carved masks that accompany St. Nicholas in the celebrations of December 5th and 6th.
