The great native wines of South Tyrol
Viticulture in South Tyrol has its roots in a thousand-year history, made of traditions, unique landscapes and native grape varieties that give life to some of the most appreciated wines in Europe. In this excellent panorama, three varieties stand out for their identity and charm: Lagrein, Schiava (Vernatsch) and Gewürztraminer.
Lagrein: The elegance of deep red
Lagrein is one of the oldest and most representative grape varieties of South Tyrol. Cultivated mainly between Bolzano, the Lower Adige and the Adige Valley, it's a full-bodied, intense wine, with a deep garnet red color. There are two variants:
- Lagrein Dunkel (dark): rich, structured, with notes of berries, dark chocolate and spices.
- Lagrein Kretzer (rosé): fresh and fruity, perfect to serve slightly chilled in milder seasons.
Interesting fact: this wine, which for centuries was considered "rustic", has today been rediscovered and valued by oenologists and producers, becoming one of the most awarded red wines in the region.
Schiava (Vernatsch): The wine of conviviality
Schiava, also known by its German name Vernatsch, is a light and easy-drinking red wine, ideal as an aperitif or to accompany traditional South Tyrolean cuisine dishes. It's cultivated in many areas of the territory, particularly between Merano and Lake Caldaro.
Its color ranges from light red to bright ruby, and the aroma is intensely fruity, with hints of cherry, blackberry and violet.
Interesting fact: for centuries it was the daily wine of South Tyrolean peasant families. Today it's also highly appreciated in wine bars and modern taverns, precisely for its versatility.
Gewürztraminer: The aromatic soul of South Tyrol
The most fragrant among the native wines of South Tyrol is undoubtedly Gewürztraminer, or Aromatic Traminer. It owes its name to the village of Termeno (Tramin), along the Wine Route, where it finds its terroir of choice.
The color ranges from straw yellow to golden, but it's the aroma that strikes first: an explosion of tropical fruit, spices, rose petals and cloves. On the palate it's enveloping, full, aromatic.
Interesting fact: Gewürztraminer is one of the most famous aromatic white wines in the world, ideal paired with blue cheeses, Asian cuisine or spiced desserts.
