Skiing safely: Everything you need to know

Skiing is an exciting activity that offers unique emotions, but it's essential to practice it in compliance with current regulations to ensure your own safety and that of others. In recent years, Italian legislation has introduced important updates to increase safety on ski slopes. Here's an overview of the main rules currently in force.

Mandatory helmet for minors

Since January 1, 2022, the use of a helmet is mandatory for all minors under 18 years of age who practice alpine skiing, snowboarding, telemark, sledding and other similar disciplines. Helmets must be approved according to UNI EN 1077 CE standards, thus guaranteeing adequate protection in case of falls or collisions. In case of violation, you are punishable with a fine of up to 150 euros.

Although the obligation only concerns minors, the use of a helmet is strongly recommended for adults as well, as it represents a fundamental safety measure to prevent serious injuries.

Mandatory insurance for all skiers

Also since January 1, 2022, it is mandatory for all skiers, regardless of age, to have liability insurance that covers any damage or injuries caused to third parties during alpine skiing. Ski lift operators are required to offer the possibility to take out such insurance when purchasing the ski pass.

The lack of this insurance can result in administrative sanctions ranging from 100 to 150 euros, in addition to the withdrawal of the ski pass.

Ban on skiing while intoxicated

The law expressly prohibits skiing while intoxicated, establishing a maximum limit of 0.5 grams per liter of alcohol in the blood, equivalent to that provided for driving vehicles. Exceeding this limit results in administrative sanctions ranging from 250 to 1,000 euros. In case of recurrence or accidents caused while intoxicated, the withdrawal of the ski pass for up to three days is provided, or, in the most serious cases, permanent withdrawal.

Law enforcement can carry out checks via breathalyzer directly on the slopes, using portable devices to verify compliance with the regulations.

Other important rules to follow

  • Responsible behavior: Every skier must adopt behavior that does not endanger the safety of others, maintaining a speed appropriate to their abilities and slope conditions.
  • Stops: Stops must be made at the edges of the slope or in places with good visibility. It is prohibited to stop near bumps or in points of poor visibility.
  • Signage: It is mandatory to respect all signage present on the slopes, which provides fundamental indications for the safety of all users.

Tips for safe skiing

  • Physical preparation: Make sure you are in good physical shape before hitting the slopes.
  • Adequate equipment: Use equipment in good condition and suitable for your level of experience.
  • Weather conditions check: Always check the weather forecast and slope conditions before leaving.
  • Respect for others: Always maintain respectful behavior towards other skiers, avoiding dangerous or reckless maneuvers.
